I’m always advocated clear, directive, intentional scheduling practice for my patients. Our patients need to know our working diagnosis, what type of treatment we recommend, how many treatments and frequency and projected costs to obtain an informed consent.
Dr. Andrew Arnold talks about patient centred scheduling.
I also advocate collaboration and interaction working towards a common, agreed goal.
Typically, our patients are not in the wellness space, at least for the most part. It is not automatic to think about symptoms, signs, causation and make sense of it. For most, it’s all about pain and what’s stopping us.
Our job as health practitioners is be pro-active and educate our patients about cause, prevention, pro-active management.
We may start off directing the process with consent and in essence have the process revolve us, however, the goal should always be to move to a patient centred model where we ‘may’ become part of our patient’s process.
We work with our patients, respecting their subjective insights and developing awareness of their health and bodies, helping them with suggestions and recommendations around tools, aids, supplements, referrals etc. so that they can build their own management plan.
Team
It’s a team effort where both practitioner and patient are teachable in an effort to reach a health goal.
This is also known as best practice where patients become empowered and independent over time.
Trial
Patient centred scheduling trials withdrawing from an initial treatment process substituting home based management tools for treatment and encouraging a pro-active strategy preferably early on.
Management strategies may include exercise, posture, aids, supplements, pain control tools including TENS, and referral to other practitioners.
Patient centred scheduling is ultimately about the relationship built on empathy and trust, and for my money, this is where the heart of practice lives.
