MANAGING FEAR AND PARALYSIS

So let’s unpack this epidemic roadblock preventing our community from reaching their optimal health goals.

First of all, let’s be clear about your fundamental, core duty of care.

To determine the best recommended course of action for your patients. That’s it!

This is of course based upon your experience, the experience of your mentors, your philosophy, your integrity, moral and ethical code and your belief systems.

So, maybe could it now be the time to stop hiding and to live up to your goals and dreams? Surely, it must be time to step into your full potential as a wellness leader?

If you are young practitioner I recommend getting a mentor. Do what they do until you can own it. Say what they say until you can own that.

Secondly, the fear is not real. Let me put that another way, you do not have the right to assume your clients decision making process. Who are you to determine whether they can afford you or not, their prioritization process, their needs and wants. It’s not up to you! All you have responsibility over is showing them what, where and when!

Thirdly, patients lie! Now these are generally white lies however, most clients do not want to tell you what they are really feeling. For example, “I’m really struggling with coming to terms with the payments for this process, even though I know it is what I need”. Instead they may say, I can’t afford it because I have to pay another bill, or just drop out. Either way you have no control and it’s rarely about you.

Fourthly, your client has pre-determined their course of action, i.e. they have decided to see you 1-2 x before they even set foot in your practice. In my experience this around 60% of the community. So don’t sweat it. If 3-4 out of 10 clients stick around you’re doing great.

So feel the fear and do it anyway. Just show your clients what they need; provide them with product suggestions, prescription options, referrals, and of course your treatment plans and then ‘let them go’. You’re reception can then deal with their decision making process. Just be intentional and clear.

But please, DO NOT LET A CLIENT OUT OF YOUR ROOM UNTIL YOU HAVE PROVIDED THEM WITH A CLEAR LIST OF RECOMMENDATIONS INCLUDING TIME AND COST COMMITMENTS, and get an agreement either way.
