Friend or Leader?

Be the parent.

As a practice mentor I see this all the time. Practitioners think they need to be the client’s friend in order to achieve the best health outcomes.

Not true, in fact far from it.

My mentor, Dr John Hinwood used to say to me when you’re NICE to your clients, you’re NOT INTERESTED TO CARE ENOUGH!

Here’s the problem.

  1. When we get too friendly we dilute our real message, what the client really needs to hear to move forwards with their health.
  2. We risk client’s feeling less cared for, contrary to what we may feel we are achieving. Client’s start to become upset that we’re focusing more on banter than actually getting the job done.
  3. Clients start focusing on time spent in the room rather than the quality of what we’re delivering.
  4. Client’s start to lose respect for the practitioner, they move to a vote of no-confidence.

There’s a saying, ‘you’re only as good as your last consultation’. Clients will move on even if they’ve seen you for years and years.

Building a client-practitioner relationship is about respect, leadership and clear boundaries.

It’s about making sure your deliver each and every time your absolute best. With that done they’re time to banter but not before.

Make it your priority every visit irrespective how well you think you know the client. Stay focused and vigilant.

In my view, clients very rarely cross that divide, and become friends. It’s a false sense of security, don’t be lured.
